Heritage Corridor Destinations Showcases the Region to Visiting Tour Groups

Joliet, IL — Heritage Corridor Destinations (HCD) recently welcomed multiple tour groups to explore the many attractions and historic treasures of The First Hundred Miles — from world-class museums to iconic Route 66 landmarks.

One group of approximately 35 members from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum traveled by train from Springfield to Joliet for a full day of exploration. “Putting together customized itineraries for groups on tight schedules is something we do on a regular basis,” said Robert Navarro, President and CEO of Heritage Corridor Destinations. “What makes our region special is the diversity of experiences available — from historic landmarks and small-town charm to unforgettable Route 66 attractions. We take pride in curating trips that connect people to authentic local stories.”

Heritage Corridor destinations also hosted a team from Atlas Obscura, the global community of explorers known for uncovering unique and offbeat travel destinations. Their visit featured several Route 66 stops including the Old Joliet Prison, the Gemini Giant and The Landing Pad in Wilmington, and the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac.

In addition, Brand USA, the nation’s destination marketing organization, spent several days in the region as part of their storytelling campaign for the 2026 Route 66 Centennial. Twelve tourism professionals from Germany visited key attractions including the Old Joliet Prison, the Gemini Giant, Ambler’s Texaco Station in Dwight, Old Route 66 Family Restaurant in Dwight, the Pontiac-Oakland Automobile Museum, and the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac.
